Sudan: Protests and tight security likely in Khartoum and other major cities through late June despite lifting of state of emergency /update 4
Heightened security and demonstrations are likely across Sudan through at least late June despite lifting of state of emergency.
Event
Tight security and further protests are likely across Sudan through at least late June despite the fact that the government lifted the nation's state of emergency (SoE) on May 29. The SoE has been in effect since the Oct. 25 military takeover that dissolved the transitional cabinet appointed following the 2019 ouster of President Omar al-Bashir, largely in response to subsequent civil unrest demanding the country's military leadership transfer political power to civilian authorities and denouncing increasing economic hardship. Disruptive anti-coup protest activity and accompanying clashes have regularly taken place in Khartoum and other cities since the late October putsch.
Authorities will almost certainly deploy a heightened security presence along key thoroughfares and near government buildings in an effort to prevent further large protests and associated violence. Security forces may close bridges in the Khartoum area to prevent protesters from gathering; activists will likely block roads. Clashes between protesters and security forces are likely during any demonstrations that may materialize; Sudanese security forces are typically quick to respond forcefully to such gatherings. Business disruptions are likely in areas affected by protest activity.
Advice
Avoid all protests due to the likelihood of associated violence. Exercise caution near potential demonstration sites. Leave immediately and take refuge in a secure, nongovernmental building if violence erupts. Monitor local media for details concerning protest activity, as organizers may not announce plans in advance. Follow the instructions of local authorities.
