Argentina: Truckers plan nationwide strike and blockades from June 22

Truckers plan strike and blockades across Argentina from June 22. Tight security, transport disruptions likely; clashes possible.

Warning

Event

Activists from several transport unions, including truckers from the National Union of Carriers and Related Companies of the Argentine Republic (Union Nacional de Transportistas y Afines de la Republica Argentina, Untra) and port workers from the Union of Port Administration Workers (Sindicato Unico de Trabajadores de Administraciones Portuarias, Sutap), plan to strike and demonstrate throughout Argentina starting June 22. The action aims to protest rising fuel costs. Protesters will set up roadblocks on major routes across the country to prevent cargo trucks from crossing; organizers say they will not target other vehicles, such as private cars and emergency transport. Reports indicate ongoing roadblocks on National Route 151 near Cipolletti in Rio Negro Province; the intersection of National Route A012 and Provincial Route 18 near Rosario, Santa Fe Province; and highways between Rosario and Buenos Aires as of early June 22. Demonstrators plan to stage additional blockades in Rio Cuarto, Rio Primero, and Sinsacate in Cordoba Province. Drivers in Tucuman Province also blocked roads across the province during related demonstrations June 21. Protesters claim they will carry out their actions until officials address their demands for access to affordable fuel.

Increased security, road congestion, and localized transport disruptions are likely near roadblocks and protest areas. Other possible gathering venues include outside government buildings, fuel and cargo depots, and at public squares and popular demonstration sites nationwide. Clashes between activists and security forces cannot be ruled out, especially if officers attempt to disperse crowds forcibly. Cargo shipping delays, fuel supply shortages, and associated business disruptions may occur if the strike and demonstrations are prolonged.

Advice

Avoid all demonstrations due to possible clashes. Allow extra time to reach destinations near potential protest sites in major cities. Heed the instructions of local authorities. Do not attempt to circumvent blockades; wait for police to dislodge them. Reconfirm shipping schedules and consider alternative routes for time-sensitive deliveries.
