Event

Disruptions are ongoing across parts of Carinthia State in southern Austria as of June 29 after heavy rainfall triggered flash flooding and landslides. A storm overnight June 28-29 brought strong winds and torrential rainfall to the region, with the municipalities of Treffen and Arriach in Villach-Land District amongst the worst affected. Authorities have reported one fatality and one person is still missing as of June 29. Some villages were cut off as flooding and landslides blocked roads in the affected area. Electricity, water supply, and mobile communications have been disrupted in some areas. Authorities have warned that further landslides are possible in the coming hours and days.

Further storms are expected in the region June 29. The Central Institution for Meteorology and Geodynamics (ZAMG) has issued yellow thunderstorm warnings (the lowest level on a three-tier scale) across central and eastern Carinthia State through 22:00 June 29. Thunderstorms may be accompanied by heavy downpours, strong winds, lightning, and possible hail storms. Officials could update and possibly extend the coverage of weather alerts over the coming days.

Hazardous Conditions
Further sustained heavy rainfall could trigger additional flooding in low-lying communities near rivers, streams, and creeks. Urban flooding is also possible in developed areas with easily overwhelmed stormwater drainage systems. Sites located downstream from large reservoirs or rivers may be subject to flash flooding after relatively short periods of intense rainfall. Landslides are possible in hilly or mountainous areas, especially where the soil has become saturated by heavy rainfall.

Authorities could issue mandatory evacuation orders for flood-prone communities over the coming days. Disruptions to electricity and telecommunications services are possible where significant flooding or landslides impact utility networks.

Transport
Floodwaters and debris flows may render some bridges, rail networks, or roadways impassable, impacting overland travel in and around affected areas. Ponding on road surfaces could cause hazardous driving conditions on regional highways. Authorities could temporarily close some low-lying routes that become inundated by floodwaters. Flooding could block regional rail lines; freight and passenger train delays and cancellations are likely in areas that see heavy rainfall and potential track inundation.
