Austria: Unionized public workers to demonstrate in Vienna Nov. 26

Unionized public workers to protest at Federal Chancellery in Vienna, Austria, from 15:00 Nov. 26. Significant transport disruptions likely.

Warning

Public-sector workers affiliated with the Public Services Union (GOeD) plan to protest in front of the Federal Chancellery on Ballhausplatz in Vienna from 15:00 Nov. 26. The purpose of the demonstration is to demand salary increases. Some 15,000 people will likely participate in the protest. Rally organizers have asserted that the Ringstrasse will be closed between Schottentor and the Vienna State Opera (Wiener Staatsoper) from 12:00 in connection with the demonstration.

The road closure will likely cause significant transport disruptions in central Vienna through the afternoon hours. Additional road closures are possible. Law enforcement officers will almost certainly deploy near the Federal Chancellery to monitor the gathering. Confrontations between demonstrators and law enforcement officers or frustrated motorists cannot be ruled out.

Avoid the protest as a standard precaution. Allow additional time if traveling in central Vienna. Strictly heed all instructions from law enforcement officers. Immediately depart the area at the first sign that any security disturbance may occur.
