Firefighters are working to contain a fire that broke out in the historical downtown of Chia, Cundinamarca department, early June 7. Authorities confirmed at least five businesses had been significantly damaged or destroyed by the flames; some residences are also likely to be affected. Three emergency workers have been injured in the incident, but there are no reports of residents affected by the fire. Firefighters indicated the fire is approximately 80-percent contained.

Chia is located in the northern outskirts of Bogota and frequently attracts large numbers of tourists. Disruptions in the area are likely through late June 7 as emergency crews work to contain and put out the fire. Evacuations of local residents are possible.

Avoid the area. Allow additional time if you are operating north of Bogota, June 7. Strictly heed instructions from authorities. Consider remaining indoors if smoke is heavy, especially if you suffer from a respiratory illness such as asthma, or conditions that lead to increased risk from smoke exposure. Eye irritation is possible; flush irritated eyes with copious amounts of clean water.
