Congo: Oil workers plan to strike nationwide from June 27

Oil workers plan to strike across Congo June 27. Protests, and localized transport disruptions possible.

Informational

Event

Oil workers in Congo have called for a hunger strike at refineries, oil terminals, and onshore and offshore bases from June 27. From June 29, oil workers have planned to stop working at all offices and industrial bases in Pointe-Noire, while the hunger strike continues. Participants intend to denounce low salaries and demand compensation for a work stoppage at the height of the pandemic. The duration of the strike remains unclear as of June 27. Participants are likely to continue striking until their demands are met.

Related demonstrations are possible. Although violence is unlikely, clashes between police and strike supporters may occur, especially if police attempt to clear protester roadblocks. If the strike is prolonged, supply chain, transport, and business disruptions are possible. Fuel shortages may also occur.

Advice

Confirm delivery of essential items. Make allowances for possible supply chain disruptions. Avoid all protests as a precaution. Do not attempt to pass through roadblocks.
