Authorities impose 30-day State of Siege in municipalities of Ixchiguan and Tajumulco, San Marcos Department, Guatemala, through July 8.

Warning

Event

Authorities imposed a State of Siege in the municipalities of Ixchiguan and Tajumulco, San Marcos Department, through at least July 8, following several violent incidents in the area. The municipalities are located in western Guatemala; Tajumulco borders Mexico.

While authorities have not provided details of the actions to be undertaken in the coming 30 days, a State of Siege in Guatemala means some constitutional rights of individuals in the affected area are restricted, including freedom of movement and to gather; individuals will not be allowed to protest, or to have large private gatherings, and members of the police or the military will be allowed to arrest anyone considered suspicious, without a judicial order. Authorities may also set up checkpoints throughout the municipalities, and impose nightly curfews.

Heightened security, and transport and business disruptions are highly likely in Ixchiguan and Tajumulco through at least early July. Clashes between military and armed groups is possible.

Advice

Limit any travel to the impacted areas and nearby regions. Strictly heed instructions from authorities in the area.
