Myanmar: Clashes between armed groups and military continuing in Bago Region as of late-June

Event

Armed clashes between the Myanmar military (Tatmadaw) and ethnic armed groups are ongoing in Bago Region as of late June. Recent clashes between security forces and militant groups, including the Karen National Union (KNU) and People's Defense Force (PDF), have occurred in Kyaukkyi and Mone townships. Multiple militants and soldiers have been killed in the fighting. The military has fired artillery in areas where fighting has broken out. The clashes have displaced tens of thousands of residents in affected areas.

In the coming days, authorities will almost certainly maintain heightened security in the affected areas, including checkpoints and road closures. Militant groups will probably also conduct increased patrols in the region. Violence is likely to affect transport in the area, especially roads connecting townships.
