Somalia: Heightened security likely in Mogadishu ahead of June 9 presidential inauguration

Elevated security and travel disruptions likely in Mogadishu, Somalia, for presidential inauguration June 9.

Informational

Event

Heightened security and transport disruptions are likely in Mogadishu ahead of the June 9 presidential inauguration. Hasan Sheik Mohamud will be sworn in office after winning the May 15 election. Main streets in the capital have reportedly been closed to traffic and government troops deployed across the capital ahead of the ceremony. Aden Adde International Airport (MGQ) will also be closed to all operations from 03:01 June 9-03:01 June 10; flights for emergencies and VIPs will likely be allowed.

Security personnel will likely maintain roadblocks and perform identity checks around sensitive sites and hotels in Mogadishu. Authorities could also increase security measures near government buildings and foreign embassies. Traffic disruptions are likely in areas where heightened security measures are enforced, including on roads leading into and out of Mogadishu. Security personnel may also close roads temporarily to prioritize official motorcade movements. Officials could also impose a general curfew ahead of and during the inauguration.

Advice

Exercise increased caution if operating in Mogadishu June 9. Avoid inauguration-related events to minimize potential disruptions; keep away from areas where security personnel appear to be deploying. Heed all instructions from local authorities and allow additional time to reach destinations near locations where demonstrations or other gatherings may take place.
