Sudan: Protests and tight security likely in Khartoum and other major cities through late July /update 5

Heightened security and demonstrations are likely across Sudan through at least late July; localized transport disruptions likely.

Warning

Event

Tight security and further protests are likely across Sudan through at least late July to demand that the country's military leadership transfer political power to civilian authorities and to denounce increasing economic hardship. Disruptive anti-coup protest activity and accompanying clashes have been regularly reported in Khartoum and other cities since the coup d'etat of October 2021. For their next action, activists plan to gather in several locations in Khartoum before marching to the Republican Palace on June 30.

Authorities will almost certainly deploy a heightened security presence along key thoroughfares and near government buildings amid any protest activity that may materialize. Security forces may close bridges in the Khartoum area to prevent protesters from gathering; activists could also block roads. Clashes between security forces and demonstrators are likely; Sudanese authorities are normally quick to use force in dispersing protests. Business and telecommunications disruptions are possible in areas affected by protest activity and associated clashes.

Advice

Avoid all protests due to the likelihood of clashes. Exercise caution near potential demonstration sites. Leave immediately and take refuge in a secure nongovernmental building if violence erupts. Monitor local media for details concerning protest activity, as organizers may not announce plans in advance. Follow the instructions of local authorities.
