Activists may hold further gatherings in Phnom Penh, Cambodia, following protest July 5. Clashes, disruptions possible.

Informational

Event

Employees of the NagaWorld casino and integrated resort, as well as union members, may hold additional protests in Phnom Penh after workers and union members protested July 5. More than 100 protesters gathered on Sothearos Boulevard; police set up road barricades to prevent the protesters from marching to the NagaWorld Casino. Participants demanded the government intervene in an ongoing labor dispute, in which workers are demanding several concessions, including the casino drop charges against union leaders. Workers and unions have threatened to hold wider actions if the workers' demands are not satisfied. Likely protest locations include near NagaWorld facilities and government buildings, prominent roadways, and parks.

Authorities will almost certainly impose heightened security measures and respond promptly to any further rallies. Clashes between protesters and security personnel are possible; police forcibly broke up a related rally in Phnom Penh June 27. Localized transport and business disruptions may occur, especially if there is a high turnout or if the demonstrators occupy nearby streets.

Advice

Avoid protests due to possible violence. If clashes break out, leave the area immediately. Follow all security personnel instructions. Allow additional travel time near protests. Monitor local news sources for details on protests and road conditions, as organizers may not announce actions in advance.
