Anti-MONUSCO protests continue in North and South Kivu provinces, DRC, July 27. Multiple casualties reported in protests July 25-26.

Protests denouncing the presence of the United Nations Organization Stabilization Mission in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (MONUSCO) continue for the third consecutive day in Goma, North Kivu, July 27. Similar protests have been reported in Uvira, Fizi, and Mwenga, in South Kivu; another protest is reportedly scheduled to take place in Bukavu. Protesters have reportedly blocked roads in impacted towns. Participants initially gathered in Goma July 25 to demand the departure of MONUSCO due to its perceived inaction in the region to stem insecurity. Protests then spread to other urban centers, including Beni and Butmebo. Protests erupted into violence in numerous locations with at least 15 people, including three members of MONUSCO, being killed and 60 more injured in Goma and Butembo July 25-26. during the protests, demonstrators also stormed and looted MONUSCO bases in both Butmebo and Goma.
Increased security and localized road disruptions are likely in impacted towns in South and North Kivu over the coming hours. Further clashes with security forces are possible. Similar protests are likely in the coming days and weeks across the country, notably in the conflict-impacted eastern region of the DRC.

Avoid all demonstrations. If violence breaks out, leave the area immediately, and take shelter in a secure, nongovernmental building. Maintain contact with diplomatic representations.
