Casualties reported following magnitude-6.1 earthquake, subsequent aftershocks, in southern Iran early July 2.

Warning

Event

Reports indicate that at least five people have died and 44 others were injured following a magnitude-6.1 earthquake in southern Iran early July 2. The epicenter was about 54 km (33 miles) northeast of Bandar-e Lengeh, Hormozgan Province. The tremor occurred at a depth of about 10 km (6 miles). A magnitude-5.7 earthquake and subsequent aftershocks followed the initial tremor. Strong shaking was felt near the epicenter, and light-to-moderate shaking occurred through southern Iran and parts of northern UAE.

Response operations are ongoing in southern Iran as of morning July 2. Initial reports suggest that the tremor destroyed buildings in at least twelve villages near the epicenter, and at least five have reported power outages. It could take several hours until authorities can conduct comprehensive damage assessments, especially in remote areas. Further aftershocks are likely over the coming days.

Officials may temporarily shut down transportation infrastructure in the tremor zone to check for damage. Minor disruptions could occur during shutdowns, but service will likely resume quickly if no damage is found. Utility outages are possible, particularly near the earthquake's epicenter.

Advice

Plan accordingly for aftershocks. Consider vacating multistory buildings if operating in affected areas until authorities confirm their structural integrity. Allow additional time for air and road travel, as aftershocks may prompt brief disruptions. Seek updated information on road conditions before driving in hilly areas in the affected region due to potential landslides.
