The notice advises US citizens to avoid security forces and warns of possible attacks, including attempted assassinations and explosions, targeting security personnel and supporters of the Tatmadaw regime. The embassy alert also warns of the possible violent responses from security forces to any attacks or demonstrations by pro-democracy activists and potential lockdowns and communication outages.

Context

There has been heightened tension in Myanmar after the regime announced July 25 that it had executed four high-profile pro-democracy activists for alleged terror-related acts. The report came amid anti-regime groups' continued protests and clashes with the Tatmadaw and its related forces since the February 2021 military coup, when the Tatmadaw ousted the democratically elected government led by then-State Counsellor Aung San Suu Kyi's National League for Democracy (NLD) party. The anti-regime groups include the National Unity Government's (NUG) People’s Defense Force (PDF) and various ethnic armed organizations.
