Emergency crews responding to wildfire in Vila Real District, Portugal, as of July 19. Evacuations ongoing.

Warning

Event

Emergency crews are responding to a wildfire burning in Vila Real District as of July 19. The fire broke out in Murca Municipality July 17 and is also affecting parts of Vila Pouca de Aguiar and Valpacos municipalities. As of July 19 the fire was over 3,000 hectares (7,413 acres) in size. More than 630 personnel are on-site battling the blaze. Temperatures have begun to drop slightly following a severe heatwave that has affected much of Portugal in recent days; however, conditions remain largely hot and dry and may hamper firefighting efforts over the coming days. Additional wildfire growth is likely.

As of early July 19, authorities have evacuated around 300 people from nearby villages including Valongo de Milhais, Ribeirinha, Penabeice, Mascanho, Paredes, and Vale de Egua. Authorities reported two fatalities occurred July 18 after a vehicle was caught in the flames near the village of Penabeice.

Emergency responders may close roads in affected areas at short notice depending on evolving wildfire conditions and operational needs. Smoke from the fire could cause poor air quality. Authorities may issue additional mandatory evacuation orders at short notice. The fire could also lead to power supply disruptions.

Advice

Heed any evacuation orders. Seek updated information on road conditions if driving in the affected area; road closures and detours will likely cause increased congestion and delays. Individuals not under evacuation warnings should consider remaining inside well-ventilated, air-conditioned spaces to reduce exposure to smoke. Collect essential items - including identification and any important legal and travel documents - in a "go-bag" that can be easily accessed. Charge battery-powered devices in the case of prolonged power outages.
