Uganda: Government employees to strike from July 14

Uganda Local Government Workers Union to strike from July 14. Related protests possible nationwide.

Informational

Event

Employees affiliated with the Uganda Local Government Workers Union (ULGWU) will embark on a strike from July 14, citing unfulfilled promises made by the government over salary increases. The union had previously called off a planned strike on July 6 following a meeting with Public Service Minister Wilson Muruli Mukasa. It is unclear whether the strike is indefinite. The work stoppage will likely continue if the government does not meet workers' demands.

Related protests remain possible in the vicinity of government buildings such as the Public Service ministry in Kampala. Disruptions to public services are unlikely.

Advice

Monitor local media for updated information. Avoid all protests as a precaution.
