US: Officials ask residents and businesses across Texas to voluntarily conserve energy July 11

Residents and businesses across Texas, US, asked to voluntarily conserve energy between 14:00-20:00 July 11. Utility disruptions possible.

Informational

Event

The Electric Reliability Council of Texas (ERCOT) in Texas issued a Conservation Appeal July 10, asking for residents and businesses to voluntarily conserve electricity from 14:00-20:00 July 11. According to ERCOT, an ongoing heatwave in the state may cause rolling blackouts if demand exceeds energy supplies. However, ERCOT officials said that they do not expect system-wide outages. The state Public Utility Commission (PUC) is recommending residents across Texas reduce electricity use, particularly during the peak hours of 15:00-20:00. PUC tips for conserving energy include:

  • Setting thermostats to 26 C (78 F) or higher

  • Avoid using large appliances

  • Turn off and unplug non-essential lights and appliances

  • Close shades and blinds on windows exposed to direct sunlight

  • Set pool pumps run early morning or overnight

  • Businesses should minimize lighting and electrical equipment as much as possible

Business and communications disruptions are possible throughout Texas July 11. If blackouts occur, businesses without backup generators may need to suspend operations. Traffic disruptions are possible due to malfunctioning traffic signals. Potable water supply interruptions may occur in locations dependent on electronic water filtration or pump systems.

Advice

Plan for possible power outages July 11. Charge mobile and essential electrical devices when possible and ensure backup batteries are available. Plan for localized traffic delays due to possible malfunctioning or nonfunctional traffic lights in affected areas. Exercise caution when driving or crossing streets if traffic signals are not functioning. Confirm business appointments. Verify that security systems are working. Ensure that generators are functional and refuel devices where necessary.
