Belgium: Activists representing opposition movement in Guinea plan protest march in central Brussels, Aug. 14
Activists representing opposition movement in Guinea plan protest in central Brussels, Belgium, from 14:00 Aug. 14. Disruptions likely.
Event
Political activists representing Guinea's opposition FNDC (National Front for the Defence of the Constitution) plan to march in Brussels, Aug. 14. Protestors will gather at 14:00 at Brussels' Porte de Namur and march to Place du Luxembourg. The route for the march is not known. Activists will denounce the Guinean government, its recent response to demonstrations there, arrests of activists, and demand a return to "constitutional order".
While participation levels are unclear, a similar event in 2019 attracted several hundred attendees. Authorities will likely deploy additional police to facilitate and monitor these demonstrations. Congestion and security measures, including potential road closures, are likely to cause localized transport disruption. Violence is not anticipated; however, isolated skirmishes are possible.
Advice
Avoid all demonstrations as a routine security precaution and to mitigate associated disruptions. Check local advice if traveling in Brussels at the affected times, and allow extra time to complete journeys and plan alternative routes if necessary. Heed instructions from security services and leave the area at the first sign of a confrontation.
