Warning

Event

Authorities have placed parts of Belize City under a state of emergency (SOE) as of Aug. 3 following an increase in gang violence in the area. The state of emergency applies to the St. Martin sector of the city, although authorities have not declared the measure's exact boundaries. Police are currently carrying out major security operations, particularly in south Belize City, and the SOE avails enhanced powers of arrest and the ability to call on military support. The SOE will remain in effect through at least end-August; extensions to the measure are possible.

Heightened security and disruptions to transit and business are likely throughout Belize City, particularly the area south of Haulover Creek. Additional gang violence or clashes with security forces are possible.

Advice

Avoid areas of ongoing security operations. Heed the instructions of security personnel. Allow for additional travel time in south Belize City. Reconfirm business appointments.
