A mudslide caused by heavy rains between Lytton and Spences Bridge, British Columbia Province, has shut down the Trans-Canada Highway (Highway 1) in both directions as of early Aug. 11. Flooding was first reported in the area at 20:30 Aug. 10. Authorities have indicated that they will start their assessment and response in the morning of August 11. No injuries have been reported. The location is in a remote area, and damage to the road may be extensive. As a result, it is possible that the road may not be passable until Aug. 12. The Coquihalla Highway (Highway 5) between Hope and Kamloops or Highway 12 between Lytton and Lillooet, the only viable alternatives.

Current weather models do not forecast further precipitation, but the soil may be unstable for several days. As the Trans-Canada Highway is a major route and detours will take several hours, transit and business disruptions are likely, particularly for companies trucking goods between Vancouver and northern British Columbia.

Lytton is 100 km (62 miles) southwest of Kamloops. Spences Bridge is 79 km (49 miles) west-southwest of Kamloops.

Anticipate transit and logistical disruptions and plan accordingly. Caution is advised on the Coquihalla Highway, which is susceptible to challenging weather and driving conditions. Heed all orders issued by authorities. Seek updated information on road conditions if driving in the affected area; further road closures, landslides, and detours are possible and will cause increase congestion and delays. Do not drive on flooded roads.
