Europe: Environment activists plan protests in multiple cities in Switzerland, Netherlands, and Germany, Sept. 3
Environment activists will stage protests in Switzerland, Netherlands, and Germany, Sept. 3. Heightened security and localized disruption.
Event
Activists representing different environment and climate change movements will stage protests in Switzerland, Netherlands, and Germany Sept. 3.
Switzerland: The Extinction Rebellion (XR) movement plans a "March for the Climate", meeting at 13:30 at Lausanne railway station before starting at 14:00, following a route through the city to Place de la Riponne.
Netherlands: XR activists will meet at Haarlem Station at 11:00 on bicycles, then cycle to the Heemstede-Aerdenhout Station and then on to the Zandvoort motor racing circuit. They will protest the Formula One Grand Prix taking place the following day.
Germany: Activists in Lutzerath will denounce the destruction of a village for the expansion of a coal mine, as part of a long-running campaign. Protestors will meet in nearby Keyenberg at 12:00 and then march to the site. The last such major demonstration attracted over 3,000 participants.
It is not known how many will attend each of the events. Local authorities and police will deploy to facilitate and monitor the demonstrations. Local transport disruption is likely as roads are closed along the routes for the marches. Previous protests in these locations have been peaceful, but scuffles with police cannot be ruled out.
Advice
Avoid the protests as a routine precaution. Expect travel disruption and delays if transiting the affected areas, and allow extra time for journeys. Follow local travel and security advice. In the event of clashes, leave the area immediately.
