Hungary: Student activists to demonstrate in central Budapest Sept. 2
Student activists to demonstrate in central Budapest, Hungary, 16:00-19:00 Sept. 2; increased security, localized disruptions likely.
Event
Student activists plan to demonstrate in central Budapest to Sept. 2. Participants will gather at Saint Stephen's Basilica from 16:00 and then march to the Ministry of the Interior for approximately 16:30, then on to Fovam Square for a final rally from 17:30 until approximately 19:00. The demonstrations is to demand the government take action to address reported teacher shortages; attendance will likely be in the thousands.
Additional police will deploy to monitor and facilitate the action. Large crowds and associated security measures, including possible road closures and movement restrictions, will prompt localized business and transport disruptions along the march route. The final rally at Fovam Square will likely block traffic on the nearby Liberty Bridge. The action is likely to pass off peacefully though isolated clashes between activists and security services cannot be ruled out.
Advice
Avoid the demonstration if possible as a routine security precaution and to mitigate associated disruptions. Heed instructions from security services and leave the area at the first sign of a confrontation. Check local traffic conditions and public transport schedules for disruptions before beginning journeys and allow extra time for travel.
