Maoist activists staging protest march in central Mexico City, Mexico, Aug. 8. Heightened security, localized transport disruptions likely.

Informational

Event

Maoist activists from the Coordinadora del Movimiento Amplio Popular (CMAP) are staging a protest march in downtown Mexico City Aug. 8. Participants assembled at the intersection of Calzada Tlalpan and La Coruna before marching to the Zocalo. The march route has been closed to traffic.

Although the action should remain largely peaceful, authorities will almost certainly deploy an increased police presence nearby as a precaution. Clashes between protesters and security forces cannot be ruled out, especially if security forces attempt to disperse crowds forcibly. Localized transport and business disruptions are likely.

Advice

Avoid the protest as a precaution. Seek alternate routes to circumvent related transport disruptions. Do not attempt to cross protester-erected roadblocks; wait for the police to dismantle them before proceeding. Allow additional time to reach destinations near potential protest locations. Heed the instructions of security personnel.
