Netherlands: Unionized rail workers in the Netherlands to stage rolling nationwide strikes Aug. 24-31

Unionized railway workers employed by Nederlandse Spoorwegen (NS), the main passenger network operator in the Netherlands, represented by three major unions plan to strike Aug. 24-31. The purpose of the action is to apply pressure to NS during ongoing disputes over pay. The unions have stated the action will be a series of rolling 24-hour strikes in different areas of the country, with dates and regions as follows:

• Aug. 26: North region

• Aug. 26: West region

• Aug. 29: Northwest region

• Aug. 30: Central region

• Aug. 31: East and south region

The unions intend to announce further details regarding strikes in those areas nearer the time. Organizers also state that unless NS meets the unions' demands they will begin nationwide strikes the following week. Related demonstrations are likely outside rail stations and government offices throughout the strike period.

Unless averted, the strikes will likely result in significant disruption to rail services in the affected regions, including delays and cancelations, and knock-on disruption across the rest of the passenger rail network. Increased congestion is likely on available rail services and other forms of transportation during the labor action. Heightened demand for alternative modes of transportation may also result in reduced taxi availability.
