Emergency crews responding to wildfire in Castelo Branco and Guarda districts, Portugal, as of Aug. 16. Evacuations ongoing.
Event
Emergency crews are responding to a wildfire burning in the Serra da Estrela mountains as of Aug. 16. A major fire that ignited in Covilha Municipality Aug. 6 was contained by Aug. 12; however, the fire reactivated near Vale de Amoriera Aug. 15. The total area burned since the initial fire ignited has grown to around 14,000 hectares (34,595 acres) as of Aug. 16. More than 1,000 personnel are on-site battling the blaze. The flames are being fanned by strong winds, although a slight drop in temperature and more humid conditions are expected in the coming days. Additional wildfire growth is possible.
As of Aug. 16, an unconfirmed number of people have been evacuated from settlements in the vicinity of the wildfire, including parts of the village of Valhelhas and a nearby campsite. The fire is burning on three active fronts: near Sarzedo in Covilha Municipality; near Seixo Amarelo in Guarda Municipality; and near Vale de Amoriera in Manteigas Municplaity. The blaze has threatened several homes in Vale Formoso in Covilha. Authorities may issue additional mandatory evacuation orders at short notice.
Emergency responders may close roads in affected areas at short notice depending on evolving wildfire conditions and operational needs. Smoke from the fire could cause poor air quality. The fire could also lead to power supply disruptions.
Advice
Heed any evacuation orders. Seek updated information on road conditions if driving in the affected area; road closures and detours will likely cause increased congestion and delays. Individuals not under evacuation warnings should consider remaining inside well-ventilated, air-conditioned spaces to reduce exposure to smoke. Collect essential items - including identification and any important legal and travel documents - in a "go-bag" that can be easily accessed. Charge battery-powered devices in the case of prolonged power outages.
