Portugal: Unionized airport employees to strike nationwide Aug. 19-21
Unionized airport employees to strike throughout Portugal Aug. 19-21; flight disruptions likely.
Event
Unionized airport workers employed by Aeroportos de Portugal (ANA) have announced plans to strike at ten airports nationwide from Aug. 19-21 to demand an increase in wages. The workers, represented by the Civil Aviation Workers' Union and the Commercial Aviation Staff Union (SQAC), include cabin crew and ground handling workers.
The following airports operated by ANA will be affected:
Lisbon Airport (LIS)
Porto Francisco Sa Carneiro Airport (OPO)
Faro Airport (FAO)
Beja Airport (BYJ)
Madeira Airport (FNC)
Porto Santo Airport (PXO)
Ponta Delgada Joao Paulo II Airport (PDL)
Santa Maria Airport (SMA)
Horta Airport (HOR)
Flores Airport (FLW)
Flights arriving or departing airports throughout Portugal will likely be severely disrupted or canceled should the strike go ahead. Further negotiations are expected before the beginning of the strike.
Advice
Confirm flights if booked to fly via Portuguese airports Aug. 19-21. Do not check out of accommodations until onward travel is confirmed. Consider alternative travel arrangements if necessary and arrive at airports early to allow extra time to clear passenger processing and airport security.
