Portugal: Unionized airport employees to strike nationwide Aug. 26-28

Unionized airport employees to strike at four airports throughout Portugal Aug. 26-28; flight disruptions likely.

Informational

Event

Unionized airport workers employed by Portway have announced plans to strike at four airports nationwide from Aug. 26-28 to demand improved working conditions and an increase in wages. The workers, represented by the National Union of Civil Aviation Workers (SINTAC), are ground handling staff at Aeroportos de Portugal (ANA) facilities.

The following airports will be affected:

  • Lisbon Airport (LIS)

  • Porto Francisco Sa Carneiro Airport (OPO)

  • Faro Airport (FAO)

  • Madeira Airport (FNC)

Flights arriving or departing the affected airports are likely to be disrupted or canceled should the strike go ahead

Advice

Confirm flights if booked to fly via OPO, LIS, FAO, or FNC Aug. 26-28. Do not check out of accommodations until onward travel is confirmed. Consider alternative travel arrangements if necessary and arrive at airports early to allow extra time to clear passenger processing and airport security.
