Americas: Environmental groups plan protests across the region Sept. 23

Climate activists to demonstrate in urban centers across Americas Sept. 23; localized disruptions likely.

Informational

Event

Climate activists will hold a number of demonstrations in cities across the Americas Sept. 23. The gatherings are organized as part of the broader international action dubbed "Global Climate Strike." Multiple high-profile civil society groups, including Fridays for Future, have expressed support for the action. Demonstrations likely to attract higher attendance and potentially cause disruptions include:

  • Atlanta, US: Asbury Circle 12:00-13:30

  • Chicago, US: Federal Reserve Building 11:00-13:30

  • Lima, Peru: Supreme Court 22:30.

  • Montreal, Canada: George-Etienne Cartier Monument 13:00

  • New York City, US: Foley Square 14:00-16:00

  • Ottawa, Canada: March on Parliament Hill 14:00-17:00

  • Philadelphia, US: Town Hall 17:00-18:00

  • San Juan, Puerto Rico: March on El Morro 09:00-12:00

  • Seattle, US: Townhall 12:00-13:00

  • Toronto, Canada: Queen's Park South Lawn 14:00

  • Vancouver, Canada: March and rally centered at Vancouver Art Gallery 14:00-18:00

  • Washington, DC, US: Union Square 15:00-16:00

Additional events are scheduled to take place in cities throughout the Americas with varying levels of participation; the largest actions are likely in major cities. Demonstrations could involve marches around the given location or through city centers, though event locations are liable to change at short notice due to requests from local authorities.

Any related gatherings are likely to remain peaceful, especially considering that the main organizing groups hope to attract large numbers of schoolchildren to highlight the interests of future generations with regard to climate change. Regardless, police will almost certainly deploy near the larger rallies as a precaution. Localized traffic disruptions are probable. Increased crowding on public transport systems is possible near the larger rally locations.

Advice

Avoid all demonstrations as a routine security precaution and to mitigate associated disruptions. Heed instructions from security services and leave the area at the first sign of a confrontation. Check local media sources for up-to-date information on local events, and allow extra time for travel in any protest-affected areas Sept. 23.
