Storm-related disruptions ongoing in Greater Sao Paulo, Brazil, as of early Oct. 14. Widespread power outages, casualties reported.

Warning

Widespread power outages and other storm-related disruptions are ongoing across parts of the Greater Sao Paulo areas as of early Oct. 14. A strong storm brought rainfall amounts of up to 10 cm (4 inches) and winds gusting over 100 kph (62 mph) to the region Oct. 11-12, felling trees and power lines. Authorities have reported at least seven fatalities in the area after people were struck by trees and walls. At the height of the storm, more than 2.1 million people across the Greater Sao Paulo area were without power; as of early Oct. 14, more than 750,000 people remain without power, with Cotia, Sao Bernardo do Campo, and Taboao da Serra, the worst affected municipalities. Severe damage to the power network has been caused in some areas, and it will likely take some time for services to be restored. Water supply disruptions have also been reported in some areas.

Protracted disruptions to utilities, businesses, and transport in affected areas over the coming days as response, recovery, and restoration efforts continue.

Monitor local media for weather updates and related advisories. Confirm all transport reservations and business appointments before travel. Make allowances for localized travel delays and potential supply chain disruptions in areas affected by severe weather. Do not drive on flooded roads. Charge battery-powered devices in the case of prolonged electricity outages.
