Informational

Officials will implement tight security in Rio de Janeiro in preparation for the G20 Summit from Nov. 18-19. Heightened security measures will be implemented Nov. 14-21, especially in and around the Galeao-Antonio Carlos Jobim International Airport (GIG), as well as in the Aterro do Flamengo, Gloria, and Guanabara Bay areas. Officials will also implement tight security around the accommodations of officials and along the Linha Vermelha and Linha Amarela expressways. The Santos Dumont Airport (SDU) will be closed on Nov. 18-19, and GIG will operate its scheduled flights. In total, 132 events and 26 meetings associated with the G20 Summit will occur in the city, with around 120,000 participants.

Protests will also likely occur in the lead-up to and during the summit as activists seek visibility for their causes. On Nov. 18, pro-Palestine activists plan to gather at Cinelandia from 10:00 in solidarity with the ongoing developments in the Middle East. Protests are also common and are possible at Post 5 of Copacabana Beach. Isolated skirmishes between activists and police cannot be ruled out.

Travel and business disruptions in Rio de Janeiro are likely through at least Nov. 21 due to tight security measures, a high number of visitors, and demonstrations during the G20 Summit.

Avoid event venues as a security precaution if not attending. Avoid protests and large gatherings. Allow additional time for transport, including to and from GIG or SDU. If any violence erupts nearby, immediately leave the area and seek shelter at a safe nongovernment building. Confirm all business appointments and transport reservations. Heed all transport and security advisories. Remain cooperative if stopped by officials for checks.
