Police responding to hijackings of several buses and blockades in western Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, Oct. 16; traffic disruptions reported.

Warning

Police are responding to the hijackings of at least seven public buses in western Rio de Janeiro on Oct. 16. The hijackers reportedly asked passengers to disembark the buses and then proceeded to use the vehicles to briefly block Estrada do Itanhanga amid a law enforcement operation in the nearby Tijuquinha neighborhood. Consequent traffic disruptions were reported in the area as well as changes to public bus itineraries before the suspects fled the scene and the road reopened to traffic. No casualties were immediately reported in connection with the bus hijackings.

Authorities will almost certainly pursue the suspects over the coming hours and implement heightened security measures in some areas. Localized transport and business disruptions will likely affect areas subject to increased security. Clashes between law enforcement agents and suspected criminals cannot be ruled out.

Avoid the scene of the hijackings and associated blockades until the situation has stabilized and authorities have vacated the vicinity. Consider taking alternative routes to circumvent the affected area and any lingering disruptions. Allow extra time for travel if operating in western Rio de Janeiro. If violence breaks out in your area, immediately depart the vicinity and seek shelter in a secure, nongovernmental building. Adhere to all instructions issued by local officials.
