Warning

Event

As of Sept. 21, bus drivers affiliated with the Inter-District Bus and Minibus Workers' Union are staging an indefinite strike to demand better safety conditions. On Sept. 21, clashes broke out between Barisal, Jhalakathi, and Patuakhali district workers, leaving at least six drivers injured. The work stoppage is reportedly impacting bus services along five routes, including Jhalakathi and Barisal.

Activists may hold protests during the labor action period. The largest demonstrations will likely occur in Barisal city, especially near bus depots, government buildings, public squares, and major roadways. Each gathering may draw dozens of participants.

Authorities will likely monitor protests and may attempt to disperse especially disruptive gatherings. Additional clashes among protesters, as well as between protesters and police, are possible. Activists may block or march along roadways, causing localized transport disruptions.

Barisal is approximately 85 km (53 miles) east of central Khulna.

Advice

Confirm all bus service schedules in Barisal Division during the strike period. Arrange alternative means of transport if necessary. Avoid protests due to possible violence. If clashes break out, leave the area immediately. Follow all instructions from security personnel. Allow additional travel time near any gatherings that materialize.
