Bolivia: Protesters clash with police and set fire in La Paz Sept. 8

Protesters clash with police and set fire to a building in La Paz, Bolivia Sept. 8. Avoid the area.

Warning

Event

Protesting coca cultivators affiliated with the Departmental Association of Coca Producers (Asociacion Departamental de Productores de Coca, ADEPCOCA) are clashing with police and rival coca growers and have set fire to an allegedly illegal coca market located on Calle 1 of the Villa El Carmen area of La Paz Sept. 8. In the clashes, the rival factions have thrown stones, Molotov cocktails, and sticks of dynamite at each other. Additional police units will likely deploy to the area in an attempt to restore order. Localized transport and business disruptions are likely to persist through Sept. 8.

Advice

Avoid the area. Heed the instructions of security personnel. If violence occurs nearby, immediately leave the area and seek shelter in a nongovernmental building that is not affiliated with either of the rival protesting groups. Allow for extra transport time in the Villa El Carmen Area. Reconfirm business appointments.
