Cambodia: Further protests by casino workers possible in Phnom Penh as of Sept. 12
Casino workers may hold further protests in Phnom Penh, Cambodia, as of Sept. 12. Increased security likely; clashes possible.
Event
Further protests by current and former employees of NagaWorld Casino and integrated resort are possible in Phnom Penh as of Sept. 12. At least 300 former NagaWorld employees protested outside the Ministry of Labor and Vocational Training Sept. 11, demanding the casino reinstate workers who had previously been fired and drop charges against union leaders. Workers also held a related protest Sept. 9 involving several dozen people outside the NagaWorld Hotel. While the protests Sept. 9 and 11 ended without violence, previous related protests in the city have prompted enhanced security measures and been affected by clashes between protesters and police. Organizers may hold additional protests near NagaWorld facilities, government buildings, major roadways, and parks. Several dozen to a few hundred people may attend protests.
Authorities will almost certainly impose heightened security measures and respond promptly to any further protests. Localized transport and business disruptions may occur, especially if there is a high turnout or if the demonstrators occupy nearby streets. Clashes are possible during gatherings, especially if police forcibly disperse protesters or if demonstrators attempt to breach security barriers.
Advice
Avoid any further demonstrations due to possible clashes. Seek updated information from local contacts on any rally plans and related disruptions, as organizers may not announce details in advance. Plan for possible localized road closures and business disruptions during any gathering. If any violence erupts nearby, immediately depart the area and seek shelter at a non-governmental building. Heed all official traffic and security advisories.
