Chile: Heightened security likely in Santiago for military parade, Sept. 19
Heightened security likely in Santiago, Chile, Sept. 19 during military parade. Transport and business disruptions likely.
Event
Chilean authorities will likely maintain an increased security posture in Santiago Sept. 19 for a military parade in O'Higgins Park. Officials state that around 8,000 troops will participate in the parade that begins at 10:00. Authorities will likely close main routes surrounding O'Higgins Park, including Avenida Viel and Ruta 5, and divert traffic in the area. Public transportation services will probably be suspended or delayed in the area.
Demonstrations opposing the parade have not yet been announced; however, military parade during the previous year resulted in protest and arrests, with security forces using riot control techniques such as water cannons to disperse the crowds. Demonstrators may deliberately block roads and metro tracks. There is an elevated threat of violence at demonstrations, especially at unauthorized gatherings.
Advice
Avoid all protests. If violence breaks out, leave the area immediately and seek shelter in a secure location. Heed the instructions of the authorities. Allow additional time for ground transport near the affected areas of Santiago Sept. 19.
