Dominican Republic: Medical workers' protest march planned in Santo Domingo 10:00 Sept. 7

Medical workers to march in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, 10:00 Sept. 7 to demand improvements in the administration of pension funds.

Warning

Event

Medical workers affiliated with the Dominican Medical College (Colegio Medico Dominicano, CMD) and numerous organizations plan to march in Santo Domingo Sept. 7. The purpose of the action is to protest the alleged mishandling of pension funds and private health insurance policies. Demonstrators will gather outside the CMD building located along Calle Paseo de los Medicos starting at 10:00 and march to the offices of the Social Security National Council (Consejo Nacional de la Seguridad Social, CNSS) located on Avenida 27 de Febrero near the corner of Avenida Tiradentes. It remains unclear how many people the demonstration will attract; however, thousands are likely to participate in the march, as its organizers have received support from several non-medical associations and opposing political parties.

Authorities will likely deploy increased security near the venue as a precaution. Localized traffic disruptions are possible. Although the demonstration should remain largely peaceful, clashes between protesters and police are possible if police attempt to forcibly disperse crowds.

Advice

Avoid the protest as a precaution. Allow additional time to reach destinations if operating in Santo Domingo Sept. 7.
