Eswatini: Students' union to march to key government offices in Mbabane, Sept. 30
Students' union to march to key government offices in Mbabane, Eswatini, from 09:00 Sept. 30. Heightened security likely.
Event
The Swaziland National Union of Students (SNUS) is organizing a march to the Prime Minister's office, Ministries of Labor and Social Security, and Ministry of Education and Training, starting 09:00 Sept. 30. The start point for the march is unclear. SNUS has so far received the support of the Swaziland Liberation Movement (SWALIMO) and the Swaziland Democratic Front (SUDF) - two minor opposition parties. The action is to demand the government provide more bursaries for education.
The campaign could extend beyond the Sept. 30 protest. Police are likely to maintain a heightened security presence near all protest locations, especially in the vicinity of government buildings. Localized disruptions are likely near gatherings. Violence cannot be discounted, especially if the demonstration has an overtly anti-government tone.
Context
The campaign follows the announcement that Government would reduce the number of students receiving government scholarship loans. Parents were requested to submit payslips to the Ministry of Labor and Social Security to screen family incomes.
Advice
Avoid protests and rallies due to possible violence. If clashes break out, leave the area immediately and take shelter in a secure, nongovernmental building. Follow all security personnel instructions. Monitor local news for updates on protests and road conditions, as party leaders may not announce actions in advance. Allow additional travel time near gatherings.
