France: Air traffic controllers' strike prompts Ryanair to cancel 420 flights to various European destinations, Sept 16 /update 1

Air traffic controllers' strike in Frnace prompts Ryanair to cancel 420 flights Sept. 16; flight disruptions likely. Confirm flights.

Warning

Event

An ongoing strike by unionized workers represented by the National Union of Air Traffic Controllers (SNCTA) has prompted Ryanair to cancel 420 flights scheduled Sept. 16. Ryanair has canceled flights to destinations that would have required an overflight of French airspace, including flights to destinations in Spain, Italy, Ireland, and Germany. Easyjet has also announced hundreds of flight cancelations, while British Airways has canceled 22 and Brussels Airlines has canceled 10.

The SNCTA demands increased pay in line with inflation. France's Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGAC) requested that airlines cancel 50 percent of flights arriving and departing France Sept. 16. The DGAC is also negotiating with the European air travel regulator Eurocontrol to manage flights around France's airspace.

Further flight disruptions, including cancelations and severe delays, are likely through Sept. 16, and possibly into Sept. 17.

Advice

Contact airlines to confirm flight status if booked to fly via airports in France through early Sept. 17. Do not check out of accommodations until onward travel is confirmed. Arrive at the airport early to prevent your seat from being allocated to a standby passenger.
