Emergency crews responding to wildfire in Gironde Department, France, as of Sept. 13. Evacuations and road closures ongoing.

Warning

Event

Emergency crews continue to respond to a wildfire burning in Gironde Department in Nouvelle Aquitaine Region as of Sept. 13. The fire broke out Sept. 12 in the commune of Saumos, to the west of Bordeaux. As of early Sept. 13 the fire has grown to approximately 1,800 hectares (4,448 acres) in size and more than 380 personnel are on-site battling the blaze. Strong winds have fanned the fire and further wildfire growth is possible in the coming hours and days.

Authorities evacuated over 500 people from the town of Saumos and surrounding areas due to the threat of the fire. Shelters for evacuees have been established in the neighboring communes of Le Porge, Le Temple, and Sainte-Helene. The fire has damaged four houses in the Saumos area. Sections of the DE4, D5, and D5E3 roads around Saumos have been closed due to the fire.

Anticipate the status of nearby roads to change over the coming hours and days; authorities could close routes within the wildfire complex and evacuate communities due to fire activity and the needs of response operations. The return of residents could disrupt traffic flows after authorities lift evacuation orders. Low visibility from smoke and possible ashfall could contribute to traffic delays and congestion in the region.

Advice

Heed any evacuation orders. Seek updated information on road conditions if driving in the affected area; road closures and detours will likely cause increased congestion and delays. Individuals not under evacuation warnings should consider remaining inside well-ventilated, air-conditioned spaces to reduce exposure to smoke. Collect essential items - including identification and any important legal and travel documents - in a "go-bag" that can be easily accessed. Charge battery-powered devices in the case of prolonged power outages.
