Activists plan to march in Guatemala City, Guatemala, Sept. 21 to denounce corruption. Heightened security, transport disruptions likely.

Warning

Event

Activists affiliated with the Peasant Development Committee (Comite de Desarrollo Campesino, CODECA) and various other social organizations plan to demonstrate Sept. 21. Organizers plan to march from several locations in Guatemala City beginning 06:00. Participants plan to gather at four strategic points; El Trebol, Obelisco, Periferico, and Metro Norte. Protesters will march and converge into one demonstration in Zone 1 of the capital. The purpose of the action is to demand transparent elections and the resignation of allegedly corrupt government officials. Similar protests are possible throughout the country. It was not immediately clear how many people the demonstrations will draw; however, organizers estimate hundreds to thousands of protesters will likely participate.

Authorities will almost certainly deploy a heightened security presence to monitor the protests. Localized transport disruptions are likely in the affected areas. Although the action should remain largely peaceful, clashes between police and protesters cannot be ruled out.

Advice

Avoid all protests as a precaution. Plan on localized transport disruptions, particularly near the rally points. Seek alternative routes and allow additional time to reach destinations. Heed the advice of security personnel. Depart the area at the first sign of confrontation.
