Hungary: Activists plan a pro-LGBTQ rights march in Budapest, Oct. 1

Activists plan a pro-LGBTQ rights march in Budapest, Hungary, Oct. 1. Heightened security, likely counterprotests.

Warning

Event

A pro-Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, and Queer (LGBTQ) rights march is scheduled in central Budapest, Oct. 1. This rally forms part of the "European Lesbian Conference" being held in the city, Sept. 29-Oct. 1. Organizers have targeted Hungary for the event because of perceived reductions in LGBTQ rights in recent years. Attendees will gather from 17:00 in Erzsebet Square before marching to Fovam Square. The attendance is expected to be in the low hundreds.

Police are likely to deploy to facilitate and monitor the event. Authorities may close roads temporarily along the march route, and localized travel disruptions are likely. The march will likely pass off peacefully. However, counterprotests are likely, and scuffles cannot be ruled out.

Advice

Avoid all protests as a routine security precaution. Follow local travel and security advice. Allow extra time if traveling in the affected area and expect congestion on public transport before and after the event. In the event of violence, withdraw from the area and seek shelter.
