Internet access limited in Tehran, Iran, as of early Sept. 17 following death of Mahsa Amini in custody and related protest activity.

Warning

Event

Internet services are limited in Tehran as of early Sept. 17 amid protest activity related to the death in custody of Mahsa Amini, a 22-year-old woman detained by morality police after reportedly being found in violation of the country's hijab rules. Internet observatory NetBlocks has confirmed that connectivity in Tehran was at about 67 percent of typical levels at around 00:40; it was not immediately clear how long the outage would last. Protesters denouncing Amini's death have reportedly gathered near the capital's Argentina Square amid a heightened security presence overnight Sept. 16-17. President Ebrahim Raisi has instructed officials to investigate the cause of Amini's death.

Additional, related demonstrations are likely in Tehran over the coming days. Increased security and transport disruptions are likely around any protest activity. Clashes between police and protesters are possible, particularly if demonstrators are overly disruptive or ignore police orders to disperse.

Advice

Avoid all protests due to the potential for clashes. If violence erupts nearby, immediately depart the area and seek shelter at a secure, nongovernmental building. Allow additional time to reach destinations near protest-affected areas. Heed all official security and travel advisories.
