Italy: Airport unions to strike nationwide and protest in Milan Sept. 12

Airport unions to strike nationwide and protest in Milan, Italy. Sept. 12. Airport and flight disruptions likely

Warning

Event

Unionized ground staff at airports nationwide associated with the Basic Unitary Confederation (CUB), Basic Trade Union (USB), and other unions plan to strike nationwide 00:01-23:59 Sept. 12. The purpose of the action is to demand an increase in wages and improved work contracts. In addition, striking workers plan to demonstrate from 10:00 at Cargo City, located in the southwestern sector of Milan's Malpensa Airport (MXP).

Unless adverted, the labor actions could disrupt airport services and flight schedules at facilities nationwide. However, they are unlikely to be crippling as Italian law mandates minimum levels of essential services during labor actions. Police are likely to deploy to monitor the demonstration at MXP. Localized disruptions are possible. Violence is unlikely.

Advice

Contact airlines to confirm flight status if booked to fly via Italian airports Sept. 12. Do not check out of accommodation until onward travel is confirmed. Arrive at airports early to allow additional time for processing. Avoid all demonstrations.
