Myanmar: Authorities continue to impose curfew and gathering restrictions in parts of Naypyidaw Union Territory since Sept. 17.

Authorities continue to impose 00:01-04:00 curfew, gathering restrictions, in parts of Naypyidaw Union Territory, Myanmar, since Sept. 17.

Warning

Event

The Myanmar military (Tatmadaw) continues to implement various security measures in Naypyidaw Union Territory, citing alleged public security concerns; the measures were imposed Sept. 17. As a part of the restrictions, officials have imposed a 00:01-04:00 curfew until further notice. Impacted areas include parts of Ottara, Zyathiri, Lewe, and Pyinmana districts; officials could expand these measures to additional districts. Authorities have also banned public gatherings of five and more people in these areas. The duration of such measures remains unclear.

Authorities may set up checkpoints and increase patrols in the affected areas. Any associated heightened security measures will likely prompt localized transport disruptions, especially along roads connecting various townships and the capital.

Context

There has been heightened tension in Myanmar amid anti-regime groups' continued civil unrest and clashes with the Tatmadaw and its related forces since the February 2021 military coup, when the Tatmadaw ousted the democratically elected government led by then-State Counsellor Aung San Suu Kyi's National League for Democracy (NLD) party. The anti-regime groups include the National Unity Government's (NUG) People’s Defense Force (PDF), as well as various other ethnic armed organizations. Tatmadaw troops continue to clash with ethnic armed groups and PDF units nationwide. Several armed resistance groups have carried out bombings and targeted killings in urban areas.

Advice

Abide by the conditions of the curfew. Strictly avoid government buildings, security installations, large concentrations of police and soldiers, or any public gatherings of five and more people that may materialize. If any violence erupts nearby, immediately depart the area and seek shelter in a secure, nongovernment building. Heed all official security instructions. Maintain contact with your diplomatic mission.
