Myanmar: Officials relaxing visa requirements for entrants from eight ASEAN countries as of Sept. 1 /update 58

Event

Myanmar authorities are relaxing COVID-19-related visa requirements for entrants from eight Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) as of Sept. 1. Officials allow travelers holding passports of Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, and Vietnam to enter without needing to apply for entry visas. The rule also applies to diplomats from the eight countries.

Domestic Measures
Public gatherings remain capped at 400 people. People must wear facemasks in public, practice personal hygiene, and maintain a physical distance of 2 meters (6.5 feet). Most parts of the country remain under a 20:00-04:00 or a 22:00-04:00 nightly curfew amid ongoing anti-Myanmar military (Tatmadaw) government unrest. Enforcement of COVID-19 and curfew measures varies. Officials may impose stricter measures, including entry and exit restrictions, in areas with increased COVID-19 activity or a high risk of outbreaks at short notice.

Authorities require partial or unvaccinated domestic air passengers above six years old to present a negative RAT result taken within 48 hours before departure.

International Travel Restrictions
Authorities in Myanmar have tightened entry restrictions and required all international arrivals on commercial and repatriation flights to provide a negative RT-PCR or rapid antigen test (RAT) result taken within 48 hours before travel. Foreigners are not allowed to board repatriation flights. Fully vaccinated Myanmar citizens on repatriation flights, all partially or unvaccinated inbound travelers, and passengers who do not comply with the pre-departure testing requirements must quarantine for seven days at designated facilities upon arrival. The affected passengers must also undergo a RAT and an RT-PCR test on the first and fifth days of quarantine, respectively, and can leave the quarantine premises only after obtaining a negative result from the RT-PCR test.

Entrants must submit a health declaration form, undergo a RAT at their own expense on arrival, and receive a negative test result before leaving the airport; officials may require passengers who test positive to undergo isolation and medical treatment at designated facilities. Most foreign nationals must also have a visa, if applicable, and purchase COVID-19 medical insurance from Myanma Insurance; resident diplomats, UN officials, and their families can use health insurance from their own countries. Authorities have resumed accepting applications for e-visas for international tourists.

Additionally, officials require entrants by land and sea to show a negative RAT result taken within 48 hours before travel. Fully vaccinated travelers by land and sea must quarantine for five days upon arrival, while partially or unvaccinated passengers must quarantine for seven days.

Foreigners cannot transit through Myanmar; foreign flight crew members are exempt but must self-isolate when in the country. Some border checkpoints are operational.

Advice

Follow all official immigration and health screening instructions. Allow additional time for immigration and health screenings at all ports of entry. Consider delaying traveling if experiencing symptoms associated with COVID-19, as they may prompt increased scrutiny and delays. Avoid any demonstration as a precaution.
