Myanmar: US Embassy in Myanmar issues security alert, Sept. 2
US Embassy in Myanmar issues a security alert Sept. 2 in response to heightened risk of small-scale bomb explosions in Yangon.
Event
The US Embassy in Myanmar issued a security alert Sept. 2, warning of a heightened risk of violence amid a rise in small-scale bomb explosions in Yangon. The embassy noted at least eight bombings in Yangon over the past 48 hours; at least two incidents impacted government facilities. The alert advises US citizens to avoid traveling near security checkpoints, regime-associated enterprises, and government buildings.
Authorities in Myanmar have tightened security measures since Aug. 30 following several incidents adjacent to government buildings and public bus stations across several townships, including in Tamwe, Sanchaung, Hlaing Tharyar, and Kyauktada. On Aug. 30, an explosion left one person killed and nine others wounded near a bus station in Kyauktada; no group has claimed responsibility.
Heightened security measures are likely to remain in place in the coming days, particularly near government facilities and recently impacted locations. Localized transport and business disruptions are likely near areas where security forces are deploying. Further attacks are likely.
Context
There has been heightened tension in Myanmar amid anti-regime groups' continued protests and clashes with the Tatmadaw and its related forces since the February 2021 military coup, when the Tatmadaw ousted the democratically elected government led by then-State Counsellor Aung San Suu Kyi's National League for Democracy (NLD) party. The anti-regime groups include the National Unity Government's (NUG) People’s Defense Force (PDF) and various other ethnic armed organizations. Tatmadaw troops continue to clash with ethnic armed groups and PDF units across multiple parts of the country. Several armed resistance groups have carried out bombings and targeted killings in urban areas.
Advice
Exercise extreme caution in Myanmar, especially in Yangon. Heed all official security and travel advisories. Register and maintain contact with your diplomatic mission. Purchase essential items and ensure several days' supply when possible. Collect essential items - including identification and any important legal and travel documents - in a "go-bag" that can be easily accessed. Monitor local developments closely. If a demonstration, fighting, or explosion occurs nearby, immediately leave the area when safe to do so, seek shelter at a safe, nongovernmental building; stay away from windows.
