Informational

Event

The Pan-African Network for Peace, Democracy, and Development (REPPAD) and the M62 movement plan to stage a protest march from Rond-point Place Toumo to the National Assembly at the Place de la Concertation in Niamey from 08:30-12:30 Sept. 18. Activists are opposing the presence of French Barkhane forces, as well as calling for solidarity with the Malian people and denouncing the high costs of living associated with rising food and fuel prices among other issues. The march follows the lifting of the ban on protest activity and has been authorized by the government.

A heightened security presence and localized traffic disruptions are likely along the protest route. Clashes with security forces remain possible if protesters are overly disruptive and obstruct road traffic, particularly if they become anti-government.

Advice

Abide by all official directives. Plan for transport and business disruptions in areas subject to protest activity as the atmosphere may change abruptly. If violence breaks out, leave the area immediately and take shelter in a secure, nongovernmental building.
