Pakistan: Increased security likely across Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Province through at least mid-September following attacks on security forces

Authorities likely to increase security in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Pakistan, through at least mid-September. Additional attacks possible.

Warning

Event

Authorities will likely increase security across Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Province through at least mid-September following at least two explosions and one gunfire incident on Sept. 13. Officials are reportedly increasing security in Peshawar as a precaution.

On Sept. 13, unidentified assailants along the Afghanistan border killed three Pakistani troops in Kharlachi, Kurram District. The incident was followed by a vehicle-borne explosion in the Ghalu Kundu area of Bara Bandai village in Swat District that killed five people, including a prominent anti-Taliban leader. In another incident, a grenade attack at Billitang police station left at least five people dead, including three police officers. The Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) claimed responsibility for the two explosions.

Additional security measures, such as checkpoints and roadblocks near government buildings, are likely over the coming days as further attacks remain possible, especially in and near Swat District and along the Afghanistan-Pakistan border. A heightened security posture may prompt associated transport disruptions.

Advice

Carry personal identification documents. Comply with all security personnel instructions. Allow additional travel time near security checkpoints.
