Unidentified assailants launched a complex attack against a police station in the Tece neighborhood of Mezitli township in Turkey's Mersin Province late Sept. 26. The incident occurred at about 23:00 when an exchange of gunfire broke out after police prevented a vehicle from entering the station's premises. At least two officers were injured during the shootout; one armed attacker was captured. Preliminary reports indicate that the attackers' vehicle contained an explosive device which police subsequently destroyed in a controlled explosion.

Local officials have as yet released no information concerning the status of the remaining assailants. No group has immediately claimed responsibility for the incident. Authorities will almost certainly maintain a tight security posture in the area over the coming days until it becomes clear that no further attacks are imminent.
