Informational

Event

Campaigners plan a series of rallies in London and other UK cities, Sept. 17, following the officer-involved shooting of Chris Kaba. Kaba was killed on Sept. 5 in South London, during a police operation. Activists are calling for a National Day of Action, and justice for Chris Kaba; the Black Lives Matter (BLM) and Stand Up To Racism campaigns are supporting these protests. The following events are planned Sept. 17:

  • London: Rally at New Scotland Yard (the Metropolitan Police HQ) and possible march.

  • Manchester: Rally in St. Peter's Square, 14:00-16:00.

  • Newcastle: Rally at Grey's Monument, 13:00.

  • Oxford: Rally in Bonn Square, 13:30.

  • Chesterfield: Rally at the Town Hall, 11:00.

Other rallies and marches are likely. A march Sept. 10 attracted several hundred supporters including local politicians and a high-profile musician.

Local authorities will likely deploy additional resources to facilitate and monitor the protests. Roads may be closed as additional security precautions and local traffic and public transport disruption is possible. Additional spontaneous protests are likely. Protest are likely to remain peaceful, but scuffles cannot be ruled out.

Advice

Avoid all protests as a routine security precaution. Allow additional time for travel in and around the affected areas. Follow local travel and security advice. In the event of violence, withdraw from the area immediately and seek refuge.
